Plans have been lodged to transform an old mill at Nun's Island into a state-of-the-art School of Law.
The building, owned by University of Galway, was built in 1810 and is considered part of Galway's industrial heritage.
The McLaughlin Building was refurbished in the 1980s, but after 2011 it was no longer used for academic purposes.
It's a protected structure, and thus under these plans it will retain it's historical visual footprint with a modern twist.
The roof and fifth floor level would be replaced by two new floors with a striking steel and glass facade.
The planning application acknowledges the development will require considerable structural intervention.
That includes not just a complete internal overhaul, but sensitive upgrades to all existing windows and external cladding that respect the heritage of the building.
City planners are now assessing the plans, and a decision is due in February.
