More than 2,300 drivers and road users underwent drink or drug driving tests at Garda checkpoints across South Galway in the past year.
Superintendent Oliver Baker from An Garda Síochana provided the figures at a recent meeting of the Loughrea Municipal District.
The area covered in the update includes Loughrea, Gort, Kinvara, Portumna, Killimor and surrounding areas.

In his report, he shared that there have been four fatal traffic collisions in the area in the past year, five serious incidents and a further 385 road traffic incidents with no injuries.
In the last 12 months, 402 people were caught speeding in the area, 165 drivers were detected using their phone, there were 42 no-seatbelt offences and 77 drivers were caught driving under the influence.
Meanwhile, 277 cars were seized due to various reasons - including lack of insurance and unaccompanied learner drivers.
