Galway City Council has ambitious plans to transform Murrough in Renmore into a "coastal community" with thousands of new homes.
A revision to the City Development Plan is proposing that 34 hectares of land, currently unzoned or classed recreation and amenity, be rezoned to residential.
The land is described as "strategically important", and a document states that the right infrastructure and investment could create a transport-orientated coastal community.
It also predicts that the expected housing density on the land could produce up to 2,500 new homes.
The issue is likely to come before City Councillors at City Hall in the coming months.
Fine Gael Councillor Shane Forde says this has been talked about for years - and nothing is going to happen anytime soon
