Power restored to Aran Islands after overnight gorse fires damage Carraroe substation

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Power has been restored to the Aran Islands after extensive overnight gorse fires in Connemara damaged an electricity sub-station in Carraroe.

The damage to supply cables caused a loss of power to all three Aran Islands and several areas around Carraroe.

Several units of the fire service responded to calls early yesterday evening and spent over twelve hours at the scene attempting to bring the blaze under control.

The last unit from Carraroe fire station left the scene shortly before 8 o' clock this morning.

Power has now been fully restored - but ESB crews remain on site repairing damage sustained during the fire.
