A public advisory has been issued as UHG is currently under significant pressure, with some elective procedures being cancelled.
The hospital says more than 300 people attended the emergency department yesterday.
And today, figures from the INMO show there are almost 70 patients waiting on trolleys.
The public are asked only to attend the ED in cases of genuine emergency, and to instead consider other care options.
They include GP out-of-hours services, the Roscommon Injury Unit and community pharmacists who can provide over the counter treatment for minor illnesses.
