A public consultation on major development plans at UHG has revealed the public are strongly in support of the project.
That's according to the HSE, which says hundreds of people attended community drop-in days, and there were considerable online submissions as well.
The plan for the redevelopment of UHG between now and 2045 is described as the largest ever investment in healthcare in this region.
Key aspects include 300 new beds, a new emergency department, critical care unit, new surgical theatres, a cancer centre, new women and childrens block and a permanent helipad.
This post consultation report now sheds some light on what the public make of these plans.
Two thirds were either very supportive or 'somewhat' supportive, 13 percent said they were neutral, and a further 12 percent were either totally or somewhat unsupportive.
When it comes to top priorities, capacity at the emergency department, as well as parking and accessibility, topped the list.
Other areas highlighted by the public include critical care services, outpatient services, and patient accommodation and comfort.
