Tempers flared at City Hall last night over plans for an active travel scheme along the Western Distributor Road.
Central to this row is the recent granting of planning permission for Galway's first permanent park and ride facility at Cappagh Road.
What's even the point of the new Park and Ride facility, many around the table asked last night, when there's no plans for bus lanes on the Western Distributor Road.
Instead, plans are moving forward for cycle lanes on the road, similar to what's being done in Ballybane and Castlepark.
Councillor Donal Lyons suggested that works be halted until bus lanes could be included to make the Park and Ride facility viable for commuters.
That prompted Councillor Alan Curran to express concern this would effectively "kill" the current project for cycle lanes.
He argued they're desperately needed now and overwhelmingly supported by locals, particularly given the large number of local schools.
There were heated exchanges back and forth, but the broad consensus among councillors was that the project should be done once, and done right - with bus lanes.
Management admitted that the NTA has indicated bus lanes could be on the table in the future, and this might involve tearing up some of the cycle lanes when that happens.
So it seems to be a catch 22 - cycle lanes now and bus lanes later, or possibly considerable delays to get both at once.
In the end, it was agreed not to take any drastic action for now, but instead seek an urgent meeting with the NTA to explore options.
