University of Galway study shows impact of social media on teens may be less than assumed

The impact social media has on teen health and well-being may be less than widely assumed, according to new research carried out by the University of Galway

The study of 3000 15 to 16 year olds across the West suggests the influence of time spent scrolling is relatively modest and smaller than is often feared.

The analysis also shows the impact of social media is relatively small when compared to other social and environmental factors in young people’s lives.

Bernadette Prendergast has been speaking to Professor Eoin Whelan, who led the research - he says the findings are consistent with other prior studies and explains what they show
