Newcastle Community Centre is to get a top-up of €800,000 to make up for a shortfall in funding for the €5 million project.
The government top-up will allow the long-awaited Centre to proceed to tender and construction
The two-storey centre is to be built on a two-acre site at Moyola Park Lane and will have meeting rooms, a sports hall, a cafe and a tennis court.
Preparatory work has already started on the site, and building work is expected to commence next year.
