Galway Bay FM is inviting you to get involved each month in our Monthly Photo Competition, celebrating the iconic landmarks, stunning scenery and moments of magic that make Galway special throughout the year.
We’re asking amateur photographers to capture an image taken during the month of entry that clearly says “January in Galway”, “This is March”, and so on. Each month, one winning photo will receive a prize and earn a place in the Galway Bay FM Charity Calendar 2027, which will be produced and sold at Christmas in aid of a chosen charity.
Take part! - it's a great way to showcase your creative eye for capturing something special plus you'll be supporting a good cause.
We can’t wait to see March through your lens!
March is a transition month, it feels like the days are really stretching, waking up and shaking off Winter. To capture March in an image visualise change and motion, hints of what’s to come but not fully formed. Winter hasn’t fully left, spring hasn’t fully arrived. Its a time of year of new beginnings, family outings, celebrations, lambs playing in the fields and that hopeful feeling that make you say, “Yes that’s March”
Submit your best shot for a chance to be featured on our Photo Calendar and showcased across our platforms.
Ready, set, snap!

- Orientate your smartphone to landscape mode by simply turning it sideways.
- Light is king: Golden hours (the hour before sunset and after sunrise) and Blue hours ( The hour after sunset and before sunrise ) give soft natural light that beats harsh overhead sun.
- Turn on the grid and use the rule of thirds, putting key objects along the grid lines and not dead centre.
- Get closer to the scene you’re capturing rather than using digital zoom, it will end up grainy and blurred when blown up.
- Include a nearby ‘prop’ or object when composing a picture, especially landscape to give a sense of perspective.
- Keep the background simple and don’t clutter. A busy photo can be confusing, sometimes less is more.
- Don’t be afraid to get down on your hunkers and experiment with different angles.
- If you are taking photos towards a source of light for example a sunset, reduce the exposure slightly for better detail.
- Think ‘album cover’ and not ‘photo album’.
- Take 3 pictures of each scene and pick out the best one.
