World champion Fiona Murtagh from Moycullen came through a photo-finish to take a single sculls bronze medal at the World Cup regatta in Seville at the weekend. It was one of three medals for Ireland with the women’s double of Mags Cremen and Zoe Hyde also taking bronze, while lightweight sculler Izzy Clements raced to a silver on Saturday. Murtagh won her World Championship gold in Shanghai by beating the in-form Lauren Henry of Great Britain in a photo-finish. In Seville, the Galway woman surged past Roos de Jong of the Netherlands to take third, but ahead of them, Henry edged out Viktorija Senkute of Lithuania, also in a photo, to take the gold medal for Great Britain.
The new combination in the Ireland women’s four, which included Emma Fagan from the University of Galway Club, were a long-shot for a medal in a tough class and finished sixth. The Netherlands and Australia fought it out and finished first and second, with New Zealand taking the bronze. Elsewhere, the Irish men's Quad Sculls quartet that included Martin O'Grady from University of Galway were unable to take part in Sunday's C final due to an injury picked up by one of the crew.
