Clean Sweep as All Irish Crews Advance on Opening Day in Lucerne including Fiona Murtagh and Katie O'Brien

Ireland enjoyed a clean sweep opening day at the World Rowing Cup 3 in Lucerne, with all eight crews safely progressing to the next stage of their respective events after a series of assured performances on the Rotsee.

Leading the Irish challenge, Fiona Murtagh opened the regatta with victory in her Women's Single Sculls heat. A fast opening half of the race gave Murtagh control before she held off a determined challenge from Ukraine to cross the line first and secure her place in the next round. Whilst Para athlete Katie O'Brien successfully navigated reclassification to PR1 and will race a final on Sunday.

There was further success in the Women's Double Sculls. Sophia Young and Alison Bergin produced one of the performances of the morning, overturning the result from the opening World Cup in Seville. Third at halfway, the Irish crew steadily worked their way through the field before overtaking Poland in the closing 250 metres to claim victory in their heat.

Ireland's second Women's Double of Zoe Hyde and Mags Cremen also progressed after a composed display. Racing against the United States, Great Britain, Korea and Switzerland, the pair delivered their strongest rowing over the second half of the race to finish second, holding off a determined challenge from the home crew to secure automatic qualification for the semi-finals.

Izzy Clements added another qualification in the Lightweight Women's Single Sculls. Remaining patient throughout her heat, Clements produced a strong finish to take second place and advance comfortably to the next round after a race that was briefly disrupted when one of the Dutch scullers capsized.

In the Women's Pair, Natalie Long and Imogen Magner finished third behind the United States and Czechia, with their performance enough to see the Irish crew safely through to the semi-finals.

Ross Corrigan and Nathan Timoney followed with another qualification in the Men's Pair. The Irish duo crossed the line third in their heat to secure their place in the semi-finals after a disciplined race against a high-quality field.

The final Irish crew on the water completed a clean sweep of progression. Konan Pazzia, Andrew Sheehan, Ryan Spellman and Martin O'Grady finished third in the Men's Quadruple Sculls in a time of 5:50.92, comfortably securing their place in the A semi-finals.

While the results reflected different routes through the opening heats namely two victories, two second-place finishes, two thirds and a fifth, the common thread was the ability of every Irish crew to deliver when qualification was on the line.

With all eight boats advancing, Ireland heads into the next phase of racing with representation across every event entered, providing a strong platform as competition intensifies over the weekend in Lucerne.

Quote from PD Niall O Carroll "I am very proud of each of every one of them today. It was very hot out there and they all delivered the best races they were capable of. We never ask for any more than that. We will now focus on recovery for racing again tomorrow.
