The Funeral Mass of 1970’s Formula 1 legend Guy Edwards is scheduled to take place on Thursday at 11am in Christ Church, Clifden. Edwards passed away last Friday at the age of 83, having retired to Clifden some years ago following a stellar career in Motorsport. He competed in Formula 1 from 1974 to 1977, competing in 17 races for teams like Embassy Racing with Graham Hill, and Hesketh Racing, and is perhaps best known for his bravery in saving the life of Nikki Lauda after a shocking crash in 1976 at the Nurburgring, for which he was awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal. In nine appearances at the Le Mans 24-Hour race, he scored a best finish of fourth
Born in Cheshire in 1942, Guy was known by many as ‘Mr Sponsorship’ for his expertise in raising funds and attracting backers. He is survived by his daughters Jade and Natasha, and was sadly predeceased by his late son Sean, who tragically lost his own life in a racing accident in 2013 while following in his father's high-speed footsteps. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren Flynn and Reilly May, his sister Susan, his nieces, and an incredibly wide circle of lifelong friends and former colleagues spread across Ireland and the United Kingdom. A cremation ceremony for family and close friends will take place after Thursday’s funeral mass at Shannon Crematorium.
