Over 230 Athletes Make History at Connacht Judo Championships in Galway

The Ballinfoyle Neighbourhood Community Centre was a hive of activity this past Saturday, February 14th, as it hosted the largest Connacht Judo Championships and Mini-Mon in recent memory. Smashing previous records, over 230 competitors signed up to step onto the mats, proving once again that Galway is the undisputed heart of Irish Judo in the west. The event saw a massive turnout from the wider community, with the stands packed with parents, grandparents, and supporters who travelled from across the county and beyond to witness the high-level skill on display.

A Valentine’s Day with a Twist

In a nod to the date, the tournament featured a unique "Valentine’s Theme" that resonated with all involved. Breaking from the traditional intensity of the sport, every single participant was presented with a rose, a gesture that highlighted the judo principle of mutual respect and friendship.

With nine active clubs in Galway— one of the highest densities in the country—the competition was fierce across all age grades.

  • The Club Shield: The prestigious Senshin Judo Team took home the overall Club Shield this year, following a series of dominant performances throughout the day.
  • Female Judoka of the Day: Determination and grit were shown by Alia Ní Mhullaoidh of Carraroe Judo Club, who is a true rising star of the sport.
  • Male Judoka of the Day: A standout performance came from Dean McNally of Galway Judo Club for exceptional technique and sportsmanship.

Civic Support and Community Praise

The event was honoured by the attendance of Galway Mayor Mike Cubbard, who spent the morning meeting families and presenting medals to the winners.

Quote from Mayor Mike Cubbard: "It was brilliant to join everyone at the Connacht Judo Championships last Saturday. What a fantastic event and buzz throughout Ballinfoile Castlegar Neighbourhood Centre. It was a real testament to the dedication of the athletes, coaches, volunteers and families who make days like this possible. Congratulations to everyone involved, and the very best of luck to the team representing us in Denmark. We are all incredibly proud of you."

The feedback from the community was overwhelmingly positive, with many parents and visitors noting how well-organised the day was, despite the record-breaking numbers. The seamless coordination of the bouts allowed for a smooth experience for the "Mini mon" kids, seasoned judoka of all ages and their avid supporters.

Relive the Action: Hundreds of photos from the day, including the medal ceremonies and the "Valentine's Roses," are available to view on Connacht Judo's social media.
