Galway were crowned Walsh Cup Champions for the first time since 2023, with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Dublin in Saturday's Final played at Parnell Park.
Galway did have a shaky start in the capital. A Conor Burke goal put Dublin 1-6 to 0-5 up in the first half, but Michael Donoghue's side kept plugging away, scoring the next six consecutive points and going into half-time 0-11 to 1-7 in front.
Donal Burke got the Dubs up and running in the second half with a well-struck penalty to put them 2-8 to 0-11 in front.
Conor Whelan capitalised on a defensive mistake to leave the Tribesmen 1-13 to 2-8 in front with 36 minutes played. The sides traded scores for the rest of the game, and with the sides level deep into injury time, Dublin looked like they'd won it when Conor Donohue fired over from a shortly taken 65. Galway were to get one last chance, however. Conor Cooney stepped up from a free inside his own half and nailed it to send the game to penalties. Galway won 2-1 in the shootout to claim the first available silverware of the season. Galway will turn their attention to Round 1 of the National Hurling League next weekend, away to Tipperary in Thurles on Saturday night at 7 pm.
