First half goals from Shane Walsh, Cian Hernon and Matthew Tierney proved crucial at Pearse Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as Galway defeated Westmeath by three points to book their place in the All-Ireland quarter-finals in two weeks time.
Shane Walsh's eighth minute goal put Galway 1-2 to 0-2 in front, and the Tribesmen would never surrender that lead, even after a late flurry from Westmeath with a Jack Duncan goal and a Sam McCartan two pointer left a nervy finish.
Galway now advance to the All-Ireland Quarter Finals in two weeks time, where they will face a winner of the round three games of the All-Ireland series.
