Just shy of eight thousand students across Galway will begin State Exams later this morning.
The 7,760 students includes 3,617 Leaving Cert students, 145 Leaving Cert Applied students and 3,998 Junior Cert students.
A record number of students will begin the state leaving and junior certs today, for the first time exceeding 140 thousand
Around 4 million examination papers will be handed out at more than 15 thousand exam centres across the country over the next three weeks.
As is tradition, the exams will start off with English Paper One, while Religion and Applied Maths bring the exam season to a close on 24th June.
