Evidence new marine body scrutinising seawood harvesting in Connemara

The harvesting of seaweed, and other activities in the seashore, now comes under the jurisdiction of the Marine Area Regulatory Authority.

And there's evidence in Connemara that the new marine body has taken an interest in who is, and who is not, entitled to take in seaweed without having a licence.

The Connemara coastline is over 300 miles of unyielding seashore but it has been a standby for many along the generations.

Now it comes under the jurisdiction of the State body known as the Marine Area Regulatory Authority, or MARA for short.

Some harvesters in Connemara will already have been contacted by MARA; the new regulatory body is anxious to find out if they have an established right to cut and gather seaweed.

And that debate goes back a long way.

Some clarity was established in the last decade. Those who have seaweed specific rights written into their property folios are in the clear.

However, people who have harvested in particular areas over many decades, can make a case for registration - but that process is long and unwieldy and few have gone through with it.

"Spiteanna feamainne" was an old saying in Connemara - spites over seaweed rights.

How the new Marine Regulatory body will adjudicate on such matters remains to be seen.
