Approval for major low-carbon energy centre in Doughiska

Planning permission has been approved for a major energy centre and heatpipe network in Doughiska.

The project, led by Empor Investments Limited, will based at the Merlin Park Industrial Estate.

This project aims to provide renewable energy to local businesses and new homes as they're developed.

It involves the installation of massive air heat pumps, electric and gas boilers, solar panels, and an underground heatpipe network spanning 2.4km.

The network will run along Doughiska Road, as far as the Clayton Hotel to the north, and Castlegar GAA Club on the opposite end.

There was only one public submission on the major project and it was made by local Councillor Alan Cheevers.

While he welcomed green energy developments, he did raise a number of concerns.

They included the potential impact of the installation of underground heatpipes on the busy road network, as well as the project not offering any benefit to existing residents.

City planners have approved the plans with 12 relatively routine conditions attached.
