Archbishop of Tuam assigned additional role as Bishop of Killala by Pope Leo

The Archbishop of Tuam Francis Duffy has been assigned the additional role of Bishop of Killala by Pope Leo.

The news was made public today at 10 Mass in Saint Muredach’s Cathedral in Ballina which is in the Diocese of Killala.

Archbishop Duffy takes over from Bishop John Fleming with the two dioceses being combined following Bishop Fleming's retirement in 2024 after 22 years of service.

In his address at Mass, Archbishop Duffy said the two dioceses remain distinct, their individual identities are preserved, they are governed separately, but they share the same Bishop.

He added that diocesan reorganisation across the province, and specifically in terms of Killala and Tuam, is not institutional survivalism but mission-driven renewal.

Cavan native Archbishop Duffy was installed as Archbishop of Tuam in January 2022.
