Calls on Government to intervene as Claregalway resident detained in Russia

There are calls on the government to intervene after a Claregalway resident was detained while visiting his parents in Russia.

49-year-old Dimitry Simbaev has dual Russian and Irish citizenship and has been living in Ireland for more than two decades.

His wife, 36-year-old Daria Petrenko from Ukraine, says he was seized last August after authorities found messages with anti-Russian sentiment on his phone.

The couple are living in Claregalway, and are due to celebrate their 3rd wedding anniversary on February 2nd.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it's aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
