Ceremony to remember leader of Athenry Cumann na mBan

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The leader of Athenry's Cumann na mBan will be remembered at an event in the town this weekend. (18/11)

Julia Morrissey was a founding member of the group in Galway and led over 50 Galway women alongside Liam Mellows on Easter Sunday 1916.

She's buried at the Dominican Priory in Athenry where a new headstone commemorating her life will be unveiled tomorrow.

The event is being led by local heritage group 'Friends and Relatives of Galway 1916' and will feature poetry, music and a short oration on Julia's life.
