Most local authorities improved their environmental enforcement last year, according to a new report from the Environmental Protection Agency.
The EPA says 83 per cent met its required standard for tackling issues including illegal dumping, water pollution and air quality.
And in the top three are Galway City, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, and South Dublin County Councils.
Galway County Council also performed relatively strong in the national tables, meeting 87 percent of targets.

However EPA Enforcement manager Ray Cullinane says some local authorities such as Leitrim and Sligo County Councils need to do much better.
