Galway City Council has reported a negative gender pay gap for 2025.
This means on average, women occupy higher paid roles than men at the local authority.
Organisations with over 150 employees are obliged by law to report on their Gender Pay Gap.
For several years now, Galway City Council has reported a negative pay gap, with women earning more on average.
For 2025, the gap is just over 10 percent, which is a drop of a few percent on the figure for 2024.
Critically though, the negative gap reflects the types of jobs that women occupy - and does not mean that men are paid less for doing the same job.
The report notes all male and female employees in the local government sector are paid equally for work that is the same or similar.
Overall, the council employs more than 650 staff, and two thirds of that workforce is male
