Connemara Independent councillor Tom Welby is to contest the upcoming Galway West by-election.

The Oughterard long-serving councillor is hoping to take the Independent seat vacated by now President Catherine Connolly.

The date for the by-election has not been set yet, but it must be held by April

The other candidates confirmed so far are his council colleague in neighbouring Moycullen Noel Thomas, who is running with Independent Ireland, and former City Councillor, Niall Murphy, who has declared his intention to run for the Green Party.
