Concern over low uptake of flu vaccines by Galway hospital staff

Concern is being expressed over the low uptake of flu vaccines by staff at Galway's public hospitals.

The matter was raised at a meeting of the HSE Health Forum West by City Councillor Shane Forde.

The uptake rate was just 36 percent at UHG and Merlin Park and 48 percent at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.

Management accepted it does seem low and more will be done to encourage vaccination - but pointed out some staff do get the flu shots at a GP or pharmacy rather than in the hospital directly.

Fine Gael Councillor Forde says it's still a cause for concern.
