A multi-million euro contract has been signed for the fitout of the new home of Galway City Council at Crown Square in Mervue.
The full value of the contract is not known, but the local authority has drawn down a €15m loan to fund the works, which are set to take 43 weeks.
The building was purchased for €45m in 2022, and it's expected staff will begin to move into the new building before Christmas, will full occupancy in early 2027.
Crown Square has proven controversial with the public, despite multiple independent valuations concluding it was the best option available to the council.
Attention will then turn to the future of the current City Hall site at College Road - which will be part of a masterplan for future mixed-use development.
