Council moving to tackle food waste bags targeted by seagulls

The City Council is moving to tackle the problem of food waste bags being left out in the city overnight, and falling victim to marauding seagulls.

The issue was discussed at length at City Hall, after the issue was raised by Councillor Frank Fahy.

The problem is late night food outlets leaving bags out on the street in the early hours - but they're not collected for a number of hours.

In that time, Councillor Fahy said, bags are being torn asunder by seagulls, and other birds and rodents are then flocking to the feast.

Management said it's a difficult problem, as many restaurants and takeaways have nowhere to store hard plastic bins - but they are looking at the issue.

Fine Gael Councillor Fahy spoke to David Nevin about the situation.
