Council working to close funding gap for Aquatic Centre in Knocknacarra

Galway City Council is working to close a €7m funding gap needed for a planned Aquatic Centre in Knocknacarra.

The project is led by non-profit company Forbairt Snamh Thiar and would be based at a site accessed from Altán Road and Millers Lane.

An ambitious development like this doesn't come cheap.

With an estimated price tag of €20m, there are still questions as to where all of the money will come from.

So far, it's received a grant of €8m, another €5m in private donations, and a €2m loan was approved by councillors last month.

That still leaves a multi-million euro shortfall, and Galway City Council is hoping Government will step-in.

At City Hall this week, management said negotiations are ongoing, and they've been in contact with Ministers, but nothing's been secured thus far.

They indicated they'd be willing to increase the loan to €3.5m, if Government supplies the other €3.5m in matched funding.

But for now it seems the ball is in the Government's court.
