Galway Bay fm newsroom - Councillors are casting doubt on what's being billed an "unworkable" new residential land zoned tax set to be introduced next year.

The new national tax aims to increase housing supply, by encouraging landowners to sell or use serviced lands zoned by planners for residential development.

The annual tax rate will be 3 percent of the land's market value.

The Government has faced fierce criticism over the potential impact on farmers, who are working zoned land near towns and cities - with no intention of selling.

Ballinasloe Councillor Tim Broderick says communication has also been very poor.
