Dáil hears of 'distress and tension' over ban on turf cutting in East Galway bogs

The Dáil has heard of the 'distress and tension' among communities in East Galway over turf-cutting bans.

Sinn Féin TD Louis O'Hara says there are around 40 families impacted by the ban of turf-cutting in Barroughter, Clonmoylan and Ardraigue.

The ban is part of a strategy to protect raised bogs, with those three bogs designated as Special Areas of Conservation.

Sinn Féin Deputy O'Hara told Junior Housing Minister John Cummins the ban is deeply upsetting to those in the communities who rely on turf for fuel
