€8m in refurbishment grants for derelict Galway homes since 2022

More than €8m has been paid out in grants to refurbish derelict homes in Galway since 2022.

The allocations are under the Government's Vacant Property Refurbishment Scheme, which offers up to €50 thousand euro.

The majority of the funding was awarded in the county, with €5.8m in grants supporting the refurbishment of 107 properties.

A further €2.5m was approved in the city to redevelop 49 vacant homes.

Hundreds more properties in Galway have also received funding approval in principle, but won't be paid out until works commence.

The grant is up to €50 thousand, but in cases where the cost of refurbishment is higher, a further top up of €20 thousand is available.

The scheme is also being expanded this year, to include the transformation of derelict commercial units into homes
