The HSE has dumped almost €1m worth of expired drugs and vaccines in Galway's public hospitals since 2020.

The matter was raised at a meeting of the HSE Health Forum West this week by Fine Gael Councillor Shane Forde.

At Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, some €660 thousand worth of medicines were destroyed.

Less reliable figures are available for UHG, but they're estimated to be around €250 thousand.

Councillor Forde says he accepts that some wastage is inevitable - but feels it's important that taxpayers money is accounted for.
