Galway sees 16 percent drop in marriages in 2023

The number of couples getting married in Galway city and county has dropped by 16 percent.

In 2022, 1,224 marriages took place across the county, while there were just 1,018 last year.

That's according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The Galway figures follow the national trend of a dip in the number of marriages registered last year, with 2,000 less across the country compared to 2022.

Figures for Galway City show a drop of 74 marriages in 2023 - a 24 percent decrease on the 306 registered in 2022.

Meanwhile, there were 132 less marriages across the county - with 786 couples tying the knot in 2023.

The majority of marriages in both the city and county were Roman Catholic.

Civil Marriage was the next most popular type of ceremony in the County, while other religious denominations were the next most common in the City.
