Galway County Council has closed the Gowlan East Road in Rosmuc to all through traffic.
It says this is due to damage to the bridge, which has made it unsafe for vehicles to pass.
The road closure is expected to remain in place for an extended period.
The County Council is asking road users to use alternative routes where possible.
