Ireland's first sustainable marine Christmas tree is being lit in Cill Chiaráin in Connemara

It's made entirely from recycled materials from local fish farms and marine organisations and is powered by solar panels.

They include fishing nets, buoys and sails from the Galway Hooker asscociation.

The light-switching ceremony in Páirc na Mara is now underway with Christmas carols from the local women's choir, refreshments, and a special visit from Santa.

Máire Éinniú, Director of Nua na Mara Marine Innovation Development Centre, says they wanted to create an occasion that will show the world how coastal communities can be sustainable.
