Land has been acquired by Galway City Council for road safety improvement works at the Mincloon Cross junction.
The proposed scheme, which would involve a widening of the North and South sides of the junction, also aims to increase safety at the junction by installing footpaths and street lighting.
An application for funding has been submitted to the NTA, with a response expected before the end of February.
The junction, which has been described by local councillors as 'an accident blackspot', links major housing estates on the clybaun road to the Rahoon road.
Fianna Fail Councillor for Galway City West, Peter Keane, says that work needs to get underway as soon as possible.
