There has to be a huge change in mentality with regards EU regulations, if we want to get vital flood defence works built.
That's according to local Independent Ireland TD Michael Fitzmaurice, who's been speaking to the issue during a Dáil debate.
He said lives are being ruined, and important projects are being stalled, because of possible impact on snails and flowers.
The Roscommon/Galway TD said instead of complaining, Ireland must make changes to the Habitats Directive when it assumes the Presidency of the EU later this year.
Deputy Fitzmaurice said as long as we believe that a little flower is more important than homes being flooded, nothing will change.
