A man has been jailed for more than ten years for the rape and sexual assault of a woman, and causing damage to her Galway home.
Christopher Ryan - originally from Thurles in Tipperary and now with an address at Rosedale, Derrigra, Ballineen, Cork - appeared before the Central Criminal Court.
33 year old Christopher Ryan pleaded guilty to rape, sexual assault, assault causing harm and damage to a window at the victim's Galway home on November 11th, 2023.
His ex-partner, Kerrie Keane, waived her right to anonymity so that he could be named.
Court heard they had been in a relationship for three years and on the night, Ryan wanted sex, would not take no for an answer, and became violent.
He strangled her and repeatedly told her he was going to rape her, and there was nothing she could do about it.
After leaving the house, he later returned and broke a window to gain entry, taking his clothes and a television.
When questioned by Gardaí Ryan claimed he would never hurt Ms. Keane, loved her, and had no memory of the incident.
Court heard he is an alcoholic who suffers from alcohol-related blackouts.
Ryan accepted her account and expressed remorse, and Ms. Justice Mary Ellen Ring said it was one of the "deepest breaches of trust in life" to be treated like that by a partner.
She jailed Christopher Ryan for ten and a half years.
