A new project on Lough Corrib will help salmon and trout live in trees.
Inland fisheries Ireland is explaining that large wood is being re-introduced to Corrib tributaries along with rivers in Dublin, Meath, Wicklow and Sligo's Ballisodare river.
The target rivers are home to important populations of brown and sea trout, salmon and lamprey.
Scientists say replicating natural wood structures will help nurture these species.
The wood is sourced from near rivers and includes trees that have fallen close to the channel, diseased trees expected to fall, and non-native species growing along the banks.
Potential benefits include the provision of foraging locations, refuge from predators, protection from low summer water flows or high winter floods and improved habitats to support the fish through their life cycle.
