There have been no housing commencement notices lodged in Galway city so far this year
That's according to data from the Department of Housing, which shows that this is the first time since 2019 that there has been no commencement notices issued in the city during January.
The absence of commencements in Galway city follows a much larger 138 notices issued in December, which made up the vast majority of the 168 city notices filed with the Department for all of 2025.
The news is better for the County Council, with 94 notices lodged - the highest for a year start in the last 12 years by some margin.
Over two thirds of these notices are for scheme units with the remaining 30 being for once off units.
Nationally, there has been a 73 per cent increase from January 2025, with over 2 thousand notices handed in, compared with the 1 thousand 100 received a year previous.
