NUIG study finds 40% of homeless people in Dublin say they've been sexually assaulted

Galway Bay FM Newsroom – An NUI Galway study has found that 40 percent of homeless people in Dublin say they’ve been sexually assaulted.

The new report called Empowerment to Rights, found that LGBT respondents faced more sexual assaults and harassment while most did not report incidents as they say it would make their situation "worse".

The study was carried out by researchers at NUIG's human rights law clinic and Dublin charity Inner City Helping Homeless.

Of the 100 people interviewed, 87 percent said their mental health had deteriorated.

Among the answers to the question "what's the hardest thing about being homeless" were loneliness, paranoia and shame.
