Over 300 international protection applicants to be housed at Ballybrit

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Over 300 international protection applicants are to be housed at Ballybrit.

Plans are underway to transform two full blocks at Ballybrit Business Park into a temporary 62-bedroom hub.

It's understood the occupants will be male and each room will be shared by five people.

It comes as Ireland's asylum system is under immense pressure, with a number of recent controversies over the opening of centers without local consultation.

Speaking to Galway Talks, Minister Anne Rabbitte says those seeking protection must be put somewhere - and the city has the services to support them.
