Plastic eaten by planktons may impair ocean's ability to trap carbon dioxide

Galway Bay fm newsroom- Scientists at NUI Galway are warning that microscopic pieces ingested by zooplankton may alter the oceans' ability to trap carbon dioxide.

Research from the university's Ryan Institute has looked at the impact of microplastics being ingested by marine animals and found it means that some faecel pellets don't sink as fast as before.

Greenhouse gas carbon dioxide is released during the burning of fossil fuels and it is naturally absorbed by oceans.
