President Catherine Connolly has been officialy bestowed the Freedom of the City of Galway.
President Connolly has become the 33rd recipient of this prestigious honour, joining the likes of Douglas Hyde, Éamon de Valera, US President Ronald Reagan, and Garry Hynes.
Several past recipients were at today’s ceremony - previous President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, Mary Bennett, John Killeen and former Galway Bay fm broadcaster Keith Finnegan.
In her speech, President Connolly began by wishing her sister Collete a happy birthday, going on to speak about the importance of human rights.
The President also spoke about freedom, and described the honour today as both a privilege and a responsibility
