Advance works could start his year on long awaited work on a stretch of the N59 between Maam Cross and Oughterard.
Works have been carried out in sections on the N59 in recent years, but it's complex work due to environmental concerns.
The latest section in desperate need of attention is between Bunnakill and Claremount.
The issue was raised in the Seanad this week by Senator Sean Kyne, who wanted to know when shovels might go into the ground.
Minister Jerry Buttimer said that work has been ongoing, with an important decision expected soon.
