Just shy of a quarter of a million euro in funding is being awarded to eight animal welfare organisations in Galway.
It's part of a record €6.4 million allocated nationwide to 94 charities under the Animal Welfare Grants Programme.
Galway SPCA is receiving the biggest share - almost €100,000 - while MADRA is receiving €40,000, €29,000 is going to Pro Animale Ireland and €19,000 will be awarded to Galway Cat Resue.
Renvyle Cat & Dog Rescue and Forgotten Horses Ireland will recieve around €18,000 each, while around €14,000 each will go toward Galway & Claddagh Swan Rescue and Fellenberg.
Minister Canney said the significant allocation to Galway reflects the essential and often life-saving work carried out across the county: “This is a major investment in the wellbeing of animals and in the dedicated rescues and sanctuaries that serve our communities. The €249,800 allocated to Galway will help these organisations continue their outstanding work in rehoming, rehabilitation and public education.
I want to acknowledge the extraordinary commitment of staff and volunteers who give their time to protect vulnerable animals.”
With Christmas approaching, the Minister again urged responsible pet ownership: “A pet can bring great joy, but it comes with long-term responsibility. Anyone considering getting a pet should think carefully and always source from a reputable rescue or breeder.”
