Plans for a new multi-million euro sports facility near Athenry have been rejected.
The project is led by Galway United in association with Connacht Hockey, with the land provided by Luke and Brian Comer, majority owners in Galway United.
This isn't the first attempt to build the facility, with the first set of plans rejected by county planners in 2022.
A revised effort across a 25 acre site at Mountain South was unveiled last year to great fanfare.
The floodlit facility would consist of two full-size football pitches and a full-size hockey pitch, along with changing facilities, offices, meeting rooms and a gym.
It would cater to Galway United's women's and men's teams across multiple age groups, as well as local hockey teams who have struggled with access to facilities.
But county planners have once again rejected the plans, finding the centre would amount to "disorderly and haphazard" development at odds with the existing landscape.
They noted if granted, it would set an undesirable precedent for future development in the unserviced rural area.
If it so chooses, Galway United has four weeks to take an appeal to An Coimisiún Pleanála.
