An academic at the University of Galway has been appointed to a key UN position.
Professor Charles Spillane has been named the Chief Scientist of the international body's Food and Agriculture Organisation.
Professor Spillane works at the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences and Ryan Institute, and leads the AgriBiosciences, Food Security and Climate Change research lab.
His role at the UN will see him assist efforts to defeat hunger and malnutrition, promote efficient resource management, and achieve food security across the globe.
Professor Spillane says no person should ever go hungry, and that the pursuit of food security is inseparable from the pursuit of peace, prosperity, and dignity.
