A new report shows that west Connemara has the highest percentage of residents in Ireland living over 61 kilometres from the nearest General Hospital.
The report has been issued by the Central Statistics Office this week
Data issued shows that the area from Camus north to Leenane and east past Maam Cross has the highest percentage of people in Ireland resident over 61 kilometres from the nearest general hospital.
At the far end of Connemara the Errislannan and Ballyconneely area is the part of County Galway furthest from a general hospital; that is 87 kilometres.
Other parts of west Connemara such as Claddaghduff and Carna are touching 80 kilometres from the nearest general hospital.
While parts of southeast Galway, and the northeast of the county, are a long way from the city, they have access to other hospitals nearer to them.
When it comes to proximity to local doctors, north and west Connemara is again among the most disadvantaged areas in Ireland.
